Medical transcription is the fastest growing profession in the world today. The US Department of Labor ranked medical transcription as the no. 1 home based career and it ranked no. 14 in the top 25 professions. It is projected that employment of medical transcriptionists will grow faster on average than any other occupation through 2010. The US based Medical Transcription Industry Alliance (MTIA) estimates the industry to be $25 B in size with estimated annual growth of 10-15%.  The reasons for the increasing need for medical transcriptionists are:

  1. Healthcare facilities face increasing pressures related to reimbursement and risk management.
  2. The outsourcing of medical transcription has become an effective mechanism to reduce the cost of labor, space and equipment for health care providers.
  3.  Hospitals and clinics worldwide face a shortage of qualified medical transcriptionists.
  4. There is a need for complete and accurate health data to improve the quality of care.
